ABOUT THE PROJECT

When the owners of this newly remodeled Spanish Revival home in the Los Feliz hills of Los Angeles moved from their super-modern, four-story glass home in San Francisco, they hired Danielle. They needed help in deciding which furnishings to bring along, what to leave behind and what to purchase in making the transition to their new home with their young daughter. Their vision was an interior that was both formal yet cozy and welcoming to an eight-year-old, so they had decided to go with a traditional look to match the house. Danielle steered the decorating project back towards modern, using neutral and toned-down colors throughout the house while creating a feel of relaxed luxury.

Dark wood floors prevail, counterbalanced with warmer walnut tones throughout. The living room, the centerpiece of the house, perfectly exemplifies the home’s harmonic mixture of old and new, traditional and modern, formal yet homey. The original wood floor and tiles around the fireplace were retained, while the lush velvet Restoration Hardware sofas and chairs add a contemporary flair. A vintage sideboard from the 1800’s and an antique Italian Giltwood mirror offset the modern Moroccan inspired Loloi bamboo and wool rug. A charming sitting area by the large picture window used for morning coffee and tea reflects the easygoing vibe of the owners as well as the flow and style of the house.

In the dining room, Danielle exchanged an existing formal table for a new walnut one, handmade in Portland, Oregon. Modern Sobu chairs and an HD Buttercup sideboard with soft lines were paired with a vintage Turkish rug. Neutral window treatments and original floors add warmth and comfort to the room.

The master bedroom is a testament to understated luxury, created with the use of muted colors and rich, layered textures. The bed is heaped with West Elm Mongolian lamb pillows, sumptuous throws and a Moroccan tassel blanket from Etsy. The vintage Oushak rug is plush and ultra-soft. The side tables from Room and Board and West Elm lamps add a touch of staid elegance.
